American Legion Post 90

History of American Legion William-Giroux Post 90 – Lake Linden, Michigan

Since its founding on December 10, 1919, American Legion William-Giroux Post 90 has been a cornerstone of veteran support and community life in Lake Linden, Michigan. From early meetings in rented halls to our modern facility built in 2005–2007, we’ve honored service members and their families for over a century.

Today, Post 90 remains active with the Lakes Lounge, DJ’s Grill, hall rentals, and regular veteran-focused events. We continue to serve the Copper Country with camaraderie, support, and local gatherings. Explore our full history below, then come see us in person!

American Legion History

The American Legion William-Giroux Post number 90 was organized on December 10, 1919, with Claude Cooper as its first Commander. Early meetings took place in various locations, including upstairs above the Lake Linden Pop Co. (later Mountain Valley Water Company), the old McKinley School, and the Knights of Columbus hall.

In 1954, the post purchased the former St. Jean Baptiste Society building (previously the 400 Bar owned by the Heide brothers) on Fourth Street. This two-story wood-frame structure included a club bar, restrooms, Commander’s office on the ground floor, and a large meeting room with kitchen upstairs.

By 1985, under Commander Gerald T. Heikkinen, the post had 167 members, with Kenneth A. Treidel as Adjutant, Marvin Dessellier as Finance Officer, and David Barkell as Chaplain.

In 2005, a building committee formed to plan a new post home. Construction by MJO Construction began on August 2, 2005. The project proceeded in stages: the bar area opened December 9, 2006, after the old bar closed. The old building was demolished on December 12, 2006. The meeting room floor was poured January 30, 2007, with the first meeting held April 7, 2007. The grand opening took place May 4, 2007.

Note: Minor date discrepancies in original records have been noted for accuracy; the new facility has served the community proudly since 2007.
